Clothing has always been a necessity, but today the need to recycle and reuse clothing responsibly has never been greater. The fashion industry produces billions of garments every year, and the UK alone purchases a huge volume of new clothing annually.
Unfortunately, when it comes to disposing of unwanted clothes, far too many items still end up in landfill.
According to official estimates, the UK throws away around 1 million tonnes of clothing every year, which is believed to equal roughly 4.5 billion garments. Out of this, approximately 350,000 tonnes end up in landfill.
What makes this even more concerning is that a large percentage of these clothes could actually be reused or recycled.
Reducing the amount of clothing that goes to landfill can make a significant difference to the environment. Even garments that are no longer suitable to wear can often still be repurposed. Textiles can be recycled into raw materials for new clothing, turned into insulation, used in packaging products, or shredded to create industrial cleaning rags.
Protecting the environment is something we all need to take seriously, and making better decisions about how we dispose of clothing is a simple way to help.
What Can You Do With Unwanted Clothes?
The next time you clear out your wardrobe, taking a few extra minutes to dispose of clothing responsibly can make a real difference.
Many people choose to donate items to charity shops, which is a fantastic way to give clothing a second life. However, for many people this isn’t always practical. Busy schedules, travel time, or simply wanting to clear space quickly can make it difficult to drop items off.
The good news is that there are still easy and convenient ways to recycle clothing without the hassle.
Our Commitment to Reducing Landfill
As a company, we make every effort to avoid landfill wherever possible.
Whether we’re carrying out house clearances, rubbish removal, waste removal, or property clear-outs, our priority is always:
Rehoming usable items
Recycling wherever possible
Eco-friendly disposal
Landfill only as a last resort
When it comes to clothing, we are able to rehome approximately 70–80% of the items we collect during these services.
Some people assume that having unwanted clothes collected must be expensive, but that’s not necessarily the case.
While full property clearances and waste removal services include a service fee to cover labour and disposal costs, clothing collected during those jobs is separated and rehomed wherever possible.
However, we also offer dedicated clothing collection services designed specifically to keep costs as low as possible.
Clothing Collection Options
Free Monthly Clothing Collection
We offer free clothing collections on the first Monday and Tuesday of every month.
This gives you an easy way to dispose of unwanted clothing without having to travel or spend time visiting donation points. Most importantly, it helps ensure that clothing is reused or recycled instead of ending up in landfill.
Low-Cost Clothing Collection
If you need clothing collected outside those dates, we also offer low-cost clothing collections throughout the month.
Collections are priced at just £1 per bag, providing a simple and affordable way to clear out unwanted clothes quickly and responsibly.
Helping People and the Environment
If you don’t have the time or means to take clothes to a charity shop — or simply want a quicker solution — this is a straightforward way to help both people and the environment without it costing a fortune.
And clothing is just one example.
We can all make better choices about how we dispose of items we no longer need, including:
Furniture
Books
Electrical items
Bikes
Household goods
And many more reusable items
Small actions can make a big difference.
So the next time you clear out your wardrobe and find clothes you no longer want, don’t throw them away.
Give them a second life instead.
